Randy Woolf - COmposer
Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm a composer and arranger, living in Brooklyn, and married to Kathleen Supové, a renowned new music pianist. I play the piano too, but poorly. I am from Detroit originally.
What’s your role with this music/performance? Please elaborate on your piece and writing for OCCO.
I wrote a concerto for flute and orchestra called "The Angel Of The Odd". OCCO said they were interested in presenting it, and I made a new arrangement of it for their ensemble.
What attracted you to music, especially orchestral music?
I don't know. I came to music a bit late, around 10 years old, but after a short while I was hooked. It always felt very right and exciting. Also, I love to daydream, and composing involves a lot of time spent doing that. I did not get into classical music until college, and did not write for orchestra until I was 29.
What were your musical influences growing up?
Blues, Rock, and Blues Rock. The usual names, Hendrix, Cream, The Stones and their pianist Nicky Hopkins ...also progressive rock like Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and later, jazz artists. In classical music: Beethoven, Bach, Stravinsky.

What are you doing when you’re not composing/playing? Any hobbies/interests?
I love reading about science, finance, and Kathy and I make soaps...using a store-bought base, we add fragrances and colors. And I am a total animal nut.
Besides orchestral music, what other music do you listen to?
Hip hop, recently reggaeton, music from Arab countries, Central Asia, other genres of [Western] classical. We go to the opera very often.
